Introduction

The academic year 2017-18 is a very special year in the history of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and especially for the Faculty of Education (the Faculty), as we celebrate 100 years of teacher education at HKU, a history which began with the establishment of a Department of the Training of Teachers in the Faculty of Arts in September 1917. HKU was the only institution in Hong Kong recognised officially to train teachers at that time.

At present, the Faculty has seven Divisions, seven self-funded research centres and two consortia. We are generally regarded as the premier teacher education institution in Hong Kong. In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking by Subject 2018, our Faculty is ranked fourth globally. In the QS rankings for education, the Faculty was ranked the sixth globally for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016, and the seventh for 2017.

The Faculty aspires to lead in the study and practice of education, to influence public policy and improve community life through education, and to nurture graduates who are passionately committed to their professions to fulfill its role as a major teacher-education institution with strong expertise in policy analysis and curriculum development.

In learning and teaching, we are committed to the continuing enhancement of the student learning experience. Developments in this field are characterized by interdisciplinarity, innovation, and internationalism. Our Experiential Learning Initiative is enhancing opportunities for internationalisation of students’ learning experiences.

In Research, we have established three Strategic Focal Research Areas: Science of Learning, Education Policy, and Equity and Social Justice. We lead in educational research in Hong Kong (RAE 2014), with our research comparable to the world’s best. We have just secured our first-ever award under the Research Grants Council’s Theme-based Research Initiative.

The Faculty also places great emphasis on Knowledge Exchange, for which we take initiative to share knowledge with the public, aiming to engage with and serve our community. Our KE activities have significant impact on policy and practice locally, regionally and globally.

From 1917 to the present, the Faculty has continually expanded its capacity to provide excellence in education and to commit to society in meaningful ways. From the earliest times in the city’s history we have provided quality training for a majority of teachers in the city. The Faculty has also expanded into consultancy with world bodies and developed wide-ranging collaboration with universities around the world.
